ABOUT THE HOUSING RETENTION PROJECT
The Housing Retention project takes a proactive approach in homeless prevention. It works with families and individuals to ensure a sturdy first step out of shelter and into permanent housing by providing individualized support and early intervention to challenges that arise. Retention services assist participants with: integrating into the community when they are moving from shelter to permanent housing, abiding by the terms of their rental agreement, and responding to conflicts that jeopardize their long-term housing.
- Families and individuals who participate in the program are responsible for creating goals that increase their ability to maintain housing in the future.
- Housing Retention staff provides participants with guidance, assistance and support in setting and meeting these goals.
- Staff is similarly responsive to landlord concerns, working to keep communication open regarding the rental agreement and striving to facilitate interest-based discussion before conflicts escalate.
The Housing Retention Project is a collaborative initiative among the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS), the Burlington Housing Authority (BHA), Lake Champlain Housing Development Corporation (LCHDC) and the Burlington Community Land Trust (BCLT).
